Quick answer
A PG diploma is a shorter, job-focused college credential; a master's is a university degree. The 2026 rules differ in ways that matter: a master's of at least 8 months can lead to a 3-year PGWP and needs no PAL at a public institution, while a PG diploma needs a PAL, an eligible field of study, and gives a PGWP up to the length of your program.

When a PG diploma makes sense
- You want practical, job-focused training or a career switch.
- Your marks or background don't meet a master's program's entry requirements.
- The program is in a field that qualifies for a PGWP. Check this before you apply.
- You plan two programs: two PGWP-eligible programs of at least 8 months each can be combined to count toward your PGWP length.
When a master's makes sense
- You want a 3-year PGWP from a shorter program: since 15 February 2024, a master's of at least 8 months qualifies.
- You'd rather skip the PAL step: master's programs at public institutions don't need one from 1 January 2026.
- Your English is strong: you'll need CLB 7 in all four skills for the PGWP.
- You're aiming at academic, research or specialist roles.
What about cost?
Tuition depends on the institution, the program and its length, so compare specific programs. The living-cost requirement for your study permit is the same for both: at least CAD 23,448 a year for one student, on top of tuition, for applications from 1 September 2026.
